“In my eyes I am not disabled… My disability is a label given to me by society, though invisible to myself. I see pride, passion, and power as the elements of a successful being. People say there is no such thing as an equaliser. But I disagree, as sex is something everyone yearns for – it is a social freedom. Everything is possible and nothing is normal!
The title of the photograph is so appropriate because, like the Little Mermaid, I am searching for freedom and things unknown. Hopefully, with the characteristics I possess, I will find these. Like the little mermaid wanted love, I too yearn for that. I have been so close on numerous occasions. But as I have to stand up at some point (and use my crutches to walk), once I have met a man and they are forced to realise I am disabled, they seem to become somewhat scared. I am also responsible to a degree for my lack of an intimate relationship because of my independent streak – I don’t need or want a carer, so I don’t often allow myself to become intimately involved for fear that one day my partner may feel obliged to take care of my personal requirements.”
