“When I first enlisted, I was given a five-digit South Australian ID number, but this was later changed to a four-digit Northern Territory Number (I’m a Territory boy). My basic training was at Kapooka, then Corps training at Ingleburn, then onto Enoggera, posted to 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), and jungle training at Canungra prior to departure to Malaya. I served in Malaya and Borneo in the Sarawak region near Serikin. I was also stationed at the army camp at Terendak, Malacca. R & R was sometimes at the Traders Hotel in George Town, Penang, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Port Dickson.
On our return, the battalion settled back in Australia at Woodside. I spent time at the Infantry Centre at Ingleburn, then was posted to 43rd Battalion, Royal South Australian Regiment (RSAR) at West Croydon SA, 4 Training Group at Hampstead and then posted to the clothing store at Keswick. We were next posted to Central Clothing Store St Kilda Victoria, then a posting back to South Australia to Adelaide Universities Regiment (AUR) before another move back to Ingleburn. We then returned to South Australia and a posting at Keswick where I was discharged after 25 years’ service.
I married whilst at Ingleburn (after returning from overseas) and lived in rented accommodation in Campbelltown, NSW, before moving into army quarters at Ingleburn near the training facility. The family moved with me or soon after when I was posted. Two children were born in Liverpool, NSW, and completed schooling in SA, Victoria and NSW.
I served in a similar location in Borneo to where my father had served previously and one day was airlifted out for a special ANZAC service held at Labuan, where bodies of prisoners from Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp/Marches are buried.”
