Descendant of Badu and Boigu Islands, Torres Strait

Able Seaman
Royal Australian Navy

Australian Defence Medal

“I am passionate about my people, culture, and the opportunities the ADF offers me.”

My name is Able Seaman Kirsten Taylor Hansson, a proud descendant of Badu and Boigu Islands in the Torres Straits. My totems are Yam Leaves and the Shovel Nose Shark. I was born and raised in Mackay, Queensland. I have served in the Royal Australian Navy for four years and have served on ex-HMAS Darwin and ex-HMAS Melbourne. I was lucky enough to travel around the world and decommission both Frigates (FFGs). The highlight of my career has been attending the Coloured Digger Ceremonial for ANZAC Day in Redfern in 2021. I am now at Defence Force Recruiting, Wollongong, working as part of the Indigenous Recruiting Team.
