Lawrence Sabadi

My name is Lawrence Sabadi, and I am of Torres Strait Islander and Papua New Guinean heritage. I was born on Thursday Island in 1989 and raised in Cairns, Queensland. My mother, Gloria Sabadi, is PNG, and my father is Paiwan Nona from Badu Island in the Torres Strait Islands. My family comes from Badu Island, which extends to Saibai and Mer. As a child, I had always been fascinated by the Australian Defence Force (ADF). My interest in the ADF has only grown over the years, mainly because it would allow me to travel and explore the world.

In 2011, I got the opportunity to participate in the Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP). This program helped me reconnect with my culture, obtain a better education, gain exposure to the ADF, and develop leadership skills, ultimately motivating me to pursue a career in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). I joined the RAN on January 16, 2012, as a Boatswain’s Mate. During my time in the RAN, I had the opportunity to serve in various positions both onshore and at sea, which helped me develop valuable skills and knowledge. As I progressed in my career, I decided to pursue a commission as an officer, which I successfully achieved in July 2021.

Currently, I am posted to the Australian Defence Force Academy as an advanced student, where I am studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Business, International and Political Studies at the University of New South Wales – Canberra (UNSW-C). I am excited to graduate at the end of 2024 and commence my training as a Maritime Logistics Officer in the RAN. My experience and education will enable me to contribute positively to the RAN’s mission and help me grow as a leader in the organisation.
