“Mutual Respect – that is what is needed.”

I am a Local Observer Element (LOE) for NORFORCE. LOEs are not patrolmen or soldiers, and we don’t undergo the same soldier training. Our function is to provide cultural liaison or subject matter expertise in a particular area. Ours is an ‘honorary’ rank, and we are considered a part of NORFORCE and the Army.

I have a distinct role in being able to represent the rights of my community and clan when Defence wishes to access our land. It is important that Defence respects our community and our leaders and always seeks permission to enter our land. Our community understands the land and ensures that our sacred places remain sacred and respected. I follow in my fathers footsteps as a keeper of knowledge of tracking and survival in the bush. This relationship of mutual respect began many years ago and continues today.
