Redevelopment of MUTTI’s current headquarters

Establishing a central presence in Sydney will allow us to reach a wider audience and amplify our message of inclusion. The opportunity to locate the Museum of Understanding Through Tolerance and Inclusion (MUTTI) within Cowper Wharf in Woolloomooloo presents a unique opportunity to join Sydney’s thriving arts scene, significantly benefiting the local community. Positioned within walking distance from major cultural sites like the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Australian Museum, and Sydney Living Museums, the location is poised to attract a portion of the 2.7 million visitors these institutions draw annually. This proximity is strategic, enabling MUTTI to capture the interest of art lovers and encourage them to explore Woolloomooloo’s offerings, thus integrating the gallery into Sydney’s emerging art precinct as recognised by the City of Sydney.

Cowper Wharf, noted as the world’s longest timber-piled structure, is a blend of historical importance and luxury, comprising high-end restaurants and over 300 residences. This iconic location also highlights Woolloomooloo’s socio-economic diversity, marked by a significant public housing presence. Such a setting is ideal for MUTTI, which aims to bridge community divides through art, making it an inclusive venue where diverse narratives are shared, and social cohesion is fostered. The gallery would not only enhance the cultural fabric of the area but also provide educational and employment opportunities through various exhibitions and workshops.

The proposed gallery would utilise 100m2 of commercial space along with an additional 200m2 of accessible common area, ensuring art is available around the clock to all community members, including those from less privileged backgrounds. This 24/7 accessibility helps diminish the cultural gap, making the arts a pivotal element of daily life in Woolloomooloo. MUTTI’s initiative to place an art gallery in such a prominent location underscores its commitment to leveraging art for community well-being and socio-economic upliftment. By enriching Woolloomooloo’s cultural landscape, MUTTI both supports the area’s revitalisation and ensures its diverse community is reflected and celebrated in its cultural offerings.
